How to Look Up Your ITIN Number: 3 Methods That Work in 2026
Why Does No Public ITIN Number Lookup Tool Exist?
ITINs are protected taxpayer information under section 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code. The IRS cannot publish, sell, or expose ITINs through any search interface. This is the same standard applied to SSNs. Any site claiming to look up an ITIN by name, date of birth, or email is either fraudulent or simply repackaging the IRS-approved methods for a fee.
For the canonical reference on lookup, see the ITIN number lookup page.
What Is Method 1: Checking Your CP565 Letter or Prior Returns?
The IRS mailed a CP565 ITIN Assignment Notice when your ITIN was issued. The notice displays the ITIN at the top alongside your full name. If you kept the CP565, this is the fastest method (0 seconds, no verification required).
If the CP565 is lost, any past federal tax return where you used the ITIN works equally well. Form 1040, 1040-NR, 1040-X, and 1040-SR all display the ITIN on the taxpayer or dependent line. Check both the primary taxpayer field and dependent fields if you were claimed as a dependent.
What Is Method 2: IRS Account Transcript on IRS.gov?
- Go to IRS.gov and select "Get Your Tax Record."
- Sign in or create an ID.me account. ITIN holders use a passport as the government-issued photo ID.
- After verification, choose "Account Transcript" for the most recent year you filed.
- The transcript header lists your ITIN. Download the PDF.
- If ID.me verification fails, fall back to Form 4506-T by mail (10 business days) or Method 3 below.
What Is Method 3: Calling the IRS for Verification?
Call 1-800-829-1040 Monday through Friday, 7am to 7pm local time, or the IRS ITIN unit at 1-800-908-9982. International callers without a US phone line use +1-267-941-1000 (not toll-free).
Have ready: full legal name as filed on Form W-7, current mailing address, country of citizenship, date of birth, and identifying information from a prior return (filing status, AGI, refund amount). The agent runs identity verification before disclosing the ITIN. Expect 30 to 60 minutes including hold time.
The agent can mail written confirmation to the address on file at no charge. Allow 2 to 4 weeks for the letter.
What Should You Do If All 3 Methods Fail?
If you cannot verify identity by phone, cannot pass ID.me, and have no CP565 or prior return, submit a new Form W-7 marked as a renewal. The IRS will look up your prior ITIN by the documents and biographical data on the new W-7 and re-issue the same number on a fresh CP565. Allow 7 to 11 weeks for processing.

Which Websites Falsely Claim to Offer ITIN Lookup?
Sites that advertise "ITIN database lookup," "TIN search by name," or "ITIN verification by email" are either fraudulent data brokers or paid intermediaries that simply walk you through the IRS phone process. The only legitimate disclosure channel is the IRS itself. Never enter your SSN, passport details, or banking information into a third-party "lookup" tool.
