For the underlying concept, see ITIN number on tax return.

What Format Should Your ITIN Be Written In?

ITINs are written in the same format as SSNs: 9XX-XX-XXXX. The first digit is always 9. The middle two digits fall in specific IRS-assigned ranges. Hyphens are required on paper forms; digital tax software adds them automatically. Never write the ITIN with spaces or omit the hyphens.

How Do You Enter the ITIN When Filing Electronically?

E-filing software (TurboTax, H&R Block, Free File Fillable Forms) accepts ITINs anywhere an SSN would be entered. The software validates the 9 prefix and middle-digit range. If the ITIN is rejected, double-check it against your CP565 letter. Expired ITINs trigger an e-file rejection until renewed.

What If You Are Filing for Multiple Family Members?

  • Primary taxpayer ITIN: top of Form 1040 in the "Your SSN" field.
  • Spouse ITIN (if filing jointly): top of Form 1040 in the "Spouse's SSN" field.
  • Dependent ITINs: each line in the Dependents section, in the SSN column.
  • Each ITIN must be valid and current. Expired dependent ITINs may disqualify credits.

What Happens If You Put Your ITIN in the Wrong Field?

The IRS rejects returns that have the ITIN in fields requiring an SSN-only identifier (such as Social Security wage records). Common errors include placing the ITIN in W-2 box (a) instead of leaving it blank, or entering an ITIN in payroll software when the worker should have an SSN. Verify with your preparer if uncertain.

How Do You Verify the ITIN Was Entered Correctly?

Cross-check the digits against your CP565 letter every time. The 9-digit string must match exactly. After filing, check the IRS Where's My Refund tool using the ITIN; if the tool accepts the ITIN and returns tracking data, the entry was correct.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ITIN goes in the SSN field at the top of Form 1040, just below your name. The field is labeled "Your social security number" - enter the 9-digit ITIN in the same XXX-XX-XXXX format. If filing jointly, your spouse's ITIN (or SSN) goes in the adjacent spouse SSN field.
