Why Does ITIN Processing Time Spike in Peak Season?

The IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, TX handles every Form W-7 in the country. During peak filing season the same unit also processes the federal tax returns that arrive attached to ITIN applications. Volume can triple between December and February, and staffing does not scale at the same rate. The result is the predictable 9 to 13 week peak window, with February as the worst single month.

For the official base timeline, see the ITIN processing time page.

How Do You Speed Up ITIN Processing in 2026?

  1. File in June, July, or August. Off-peak processing runs 4 to 6 weeks faster than February.
  2. Use a Certifying Acceptance Agent. CAAs verify passports on-site, so no document transit and no rejection- resubmit loop.
  3. Mail certified or tracked. Both directions. Lost mail restarts the entire clock.
  4. Use the current Form W-7 revision. October 2024 only. Older revisions are auto-rejected.
  5. Match the passport exactly. Name spelling, date of birth, and country of citizenship on Form W-7 must match the passport character by character.

How Do You Check Your ITIN Application Status?

The IRS does not currently offer online ITIN status tracking. Six weeks after mailing the packet, call the ITIN hotline at 1-800-908-9982 (U.S.) or 1-267-941-1000 (international). The agent can confirm receipt, current status, and any pending issue with the application.

See the full ITIN application status guide for what each status code means.

What Happens If the ITIN Processing Window Expires?

If 13 weeks have passed without a CP565 approval notice, call the ITIN hotline immediately. The IRS will trace the file and confirm whether the packet is in active processing, was rejected (CP566 notice mailed), or never received. Resubmissions restart the clock, so an early phone call prevents lost months.

Does Mail Transit Time Count Against the Processing Window?

No. The IRS clock starts when the ITIN Operation receives the packet, not when it was mailed. International mail can add 1 to 3 weeks each direction, so a self-filer outside the U.S. should add 2 to 6 weeks of transit on top of the IRS processing window. CAA-submitted applications skip both legs of document transit.

Frequently Asked Questions About ITIN Processing Time

The IRS publishes a standard processing window of 7 to 11 weeks for ITIN applications received outside peak filing season. During peak season (January through April) the window stretches to 9 to 13 weeks. Applications filed through a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) skip the document mailing step, which removes 1 to 3 weeks of transit on average.
