Who Needs to Renew Their ITIN in 2026? Complete Checklist

Who Must Renew an ITIN in 2026?

Any taxpayer in one of the following groups must renew before filing a 2026 return:

  • Three-year non-use: ITIN holders who did not file or appear on a federal return for tax years 2022, 2023, and 2024.
  • Retired middle-digit ranges: The IRS has retired the following ITIN middle digits in past sunsets: 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99. Any ITIN with these middle digits that has not already been renewed must be renewed.
  • Dependents listed on prior returns whose ITINs fall into either category above.
  • CP48 or CP148 notice recipients who received IRS correspondence requiring renewal.

For complete renewal procedures, see the ITIN renewal page.

What Does the 3-Year Non-Use Rule Actually Mean?

The IRS counts an ITIN as "used" in a tax year if it appears on any of: a primary or secondary taxpayer line, a dependent line, or as the recipient TIN on a third-party return (1099, K-1, 1042-S). If the ITIN appears nowhere in 3 consecutive tax years, expiration is automatic on December 31 of the third year. The IRS does not send an advance warning for non-use expiration in most cases.

For the full expiration framework, see the ITIN expiration guide.

What Is the Renewal Checklist for 2026 Filers?

  1. Confirm expiration. Check tax years 2022, 2023, 2024 for return activity. Check middle digits against retired ranges.
  2. Gather identity documents. Original or issuer-certified passport is the simplest option. Alternative combinations are listed on Form W-7 instructions.
  3. Fill out Form W-7. Check the renewal box at the top, fill in the existing ITIN, and complete all required fields.
  4. Attach a federal tax return if filing one concurrently. Pure renewals (no current return) do not need a tax return attached.
  5. Submit through a CAA, IRS TAC, or by mail to the IRS ITIN Operations unit in Austin, TX. A Certifying Acceptance Agent prevents mailing your passport to the IRS.
  6. Track the application. Renewal takes the same 7 to 11 weeks as a new application.

When Should You Choose Family Renewal Over Individual Renewal?

Family renewal is the preferred option when at least one household ITIN has expired and other members will need to renew within the next 1 to 2 years. The IRS allows joint renewal so the entire family is synchronized. This avoids future single-renewal cycles, saves on document gathering, and reduces the risk of one family member's expiration delaying everyone's tax credits.

What Happens If You Skip Renewal and File Anyway?

The IRS still accepts the return but applies these consequences: the Child Tax Credit, American Opportunity Credit, and Credit for Other Dependents are disallowed; refund processing is delayed; the taxpayer receives a CP48 or CP566 notice; and any credit-dependent portion of the refund is held until renewal is complete. Filing late renewal alongside the return is the recommended fix.

How Long Does ITIN Renewal Take in 2026?

The IRS targets 7 to 11 weeks for renewal applications received outside peak filing season (mid-April through October). During peak season, expect 9 to 13 weeks. International mail adds 1 to 3 weeks each way. A Certifying Acceptance Agent does not change the IRS timeline but eliminates document-mailing risk.

Frequently Asked Questions About ITIN Renewal

An ITIN expires on December 31 of the third consecutive year in which it is not used on a federal tax return. For example, an ITIN not used on returns filed in 2023, 2024, and 2025 expires on December 31, 2025. From January 1, 2026, that ITIN can no longer be used until renewal is complete.
