Robinhood with ITIN: Investing Without SSN (2026)
By Namira Taif, Lead ITIN SpecialistReviewed by our IRS-authorized CAA partners · Updated
Why Does Robinhood Reject ITIN-Only Applicants?
Robinhood's account-opening flow is fully automated and depends on SSN-keyed identity verification through major US credit bureaus and government records. ITIN holders do not have an SSN-linked credit-bureau identity, so the automated check fails. Robinhood does not currently offer a manual-review path for ITIN onboarding.
What Are the Best ITIN-Friendly Brokerages?
- Interactive Brokers (IBKR). Most permissive ITIN program; global access, low fees, broad asset coverage.
- Charles Schwab International. ITIN accepted on the International account product.
- TradeStation. ITIN accepted; strong charting and futures coverage.
- Webull. ITIN accepted; commission-free US stocks and options.
- eToro US. ITIN accepted; social-trading focus.
For the full comparison, see the ITIN brokerage account guide.
What Documents Do ITIN-Friendly Brokerages Need?
- IRS CP565 ITIN letter
- Unexpired foreign passport
- Secondary government ID
- Proof of foreign or US address
- Form W-8BEN (for non-resident aliens) or W-9 (for US residents)
What If I Already Have a Robinhood Account and Want to Switch to ITIN?
Existing Robinhood accounts opened with an SSN cannot be converted to ITIN-only. The standard path is to close the Robinhood account, transfer assets via ACATS to an ITIN-friendly broker (Interactive Brokers or Schwab), and re-establish under the ITIN. ACATS transfers preserve positions and cost basis.
